Four Year Old Program

Learning and Playing In a Nurturing Atmosphere

Our 4 Year Old Program provides children with a loving and nurturing atmosphere that fosters social skills of respect, manners, and friendliness. In this caring social foundation the children eagerly learn, not only life skills but academic skills. They learn their phone numbers and addresses and how to write their names, alphabet and numbers. We focus on learning through play, promoting imagination and creativity and balancing this with structure.

Project Corner: Homemade Butter

Our 4-year-old-class and 3-year-old-class joined together to celebrate Thanksgiving. The 4-year-olds dressed as pilgrims and shared with the 3-year-olds what they had learned about the pilgrims, the Mayflower and the first Thanksgiving. The 3-year-olds dressed as Native Americans and the children performed holiday songs for each other. The celebration continued with a great feast that the children themselves prepared. The corn muffins, carefully prepared by the 3-year-olds, were a great hit as was the homemade butter that topped them. All the guests at the feast were amazed by the 4-year-olds enthusiastic preparation of the butter.

We wanted to share with you how to do this simple project with your children. Letting your children make homemade butter is a great way for them contribute to any meal and to learn to appreciate where food comes from and how it is made. Besides, parents love the project because it keeps little hands busy as you finish preparing dinner.

Equipment and Ingredients Needed:

Cold glass jars with lids
Cold Heavy Cream
Pinch of Salt
1) Place empty, clean, baby food jars in fridge until they are cold.
2) Put cold heavy cream and pinch of salt in the cold jars. Tightly close jars.
3) Have the children and adults shake the jars vigorously. Take turns so everyone can participate.
4) After 15 minutes or so the cream will turn into butter and whey.
5) Pour off the whey.
6) Enjoy!
